Where installation often gets stuck

  • Your production is ready, but nobody can install it this week.
  • Installation companies charge a day rate, even for three hours of work.
  • Work at height without VCA or a MEWP certificate is your risk.
  • After installation, no photos and no signature, but plenty of arguments.

Sign fitter through Signborn

  • The right certificate for the jobRequire VCA, MEWP or NEN 3140 and only fitters who listed that certificate can respond.
  • Per hour, per jobSelf-employed fitters charge their own hourly rate. Three hours of work costs three hours, not half a day.
  • Regional matchingIn an open region, fitters close to the site get a notification. Less travel time, faster planning. You invite your own fitters yourself, anywhere.
  • Report at handoverPhotos with time and location and the end client's signature in one PDF.

Hiring a sign fitter: what you need to know

  1. What a sign fitter does

A sign fitter installs what was made in the workshop: facade signage, built-up and cut letters, light boxes, frames, banners, flagpoles and wayfinding. They also take down old signage and measure up beforehand. The work is mostly mechanical: drilling, plugging, anchoring, levelling and sealing, often at height and outdoors.

The difference from a vinyl applicator: they work with vinyl on glass, facades or vehicles. Many self-employed professionals do both, but for heavy installation at height you want someone with experience in anchoring and the right certificates.

  2. Certificates and safety

    • VCA: often required on construction sites. Self-employed professionals are usually asked for VCA-VOL.
    • A MEWP certificate, for example IPAF, for working from a cherry picker.
    • NEN 3140: needed as soon as the fitter works on or near an electrical installation, as with illuminated signs.

Ask in your job for the certificate the work needs. On Signborn that's a hard filter: only fitters with a checked certificate see the job.

  3. Cherry picker, scaffolding and permit

Agree beforehand who arranges the cherry picker or scaffolding. Some fitters have their own equipment, others hire it per job. Hire, transport and any exemption for the pavement or road usually come on top of the hourly rate.

Since the Environment and Planning Act (Omgevingswet, 2024), whether a sign needs a permit is set out in the municipality's environment plan. The client or end client arranges this before installation, not the fitter.

  4. A good installation brief

    • Address, access and when you're allowed on the pavement or site.
    • What's being installed: dimensions, weight, quantity and fixing method.
    • The substrate: brickwork, concrete, cladding, and whether there's insulation behind it.
    • Working height and whether a cherry picker is needed.
    • Whether electrics need connecting.
    • What needs taking down and removing.
    • Who signs off the handover at the end client.
  5. What does a sign fitter cost?

Self-employed sign fitters set their own hourly rate. Work at height and electrics cost more than simple installation. Travel time, cherry picker hire, disposal and urgent jobs usually come on top. See the rates page for guide prices per specialism. Through Signborn you, as the client, also pay the Signborn fee: 8% for a match, minimum €15 and maximum €150 per sign installer per job. With your own network there is no fee.

Frequently asked questions about sign fitters

What is a sign fitter?

A tradesperson who installs signage: facade signage, light boxes, built-up letters, lettering, wayfinding and frames. They often work at height and with electrics, so certificates such as VCA, MEWP and NEN 3140 are part of the job.

What does a sign fitter cost per hour?

Self-employed sign fitters usually charge €50 to €75 per hour excl. VAT, depending on experience, work at height and certificates. Travel time and cherry picker hire are charged separately. See the rates page for current guide prices.

How is that different from a vinyl applicator?

A vinyl applicator focuses on applying vinyl and lettering. A sign fitter focuses on mechanical installation and work at height. Many self-employed professionals do both. On Signborn you select by skill, so you get exactly what the job needs.

Can I find jobs as a sign fitter?

Yes. Create a profile with your skills and certificates. Once you're approved, you'll see installation jobs from agencies in your region and respond to the ones that suit you.

Can I hire a fitter with a cherry picker?

Yes. State in the job that the work is at height and ask for the MEWP certificate. Fitters say in their profile whether they have their own equipment. Cherry picker hire is agreed per job.

What if the fitter doesn't turn up?

A no-show after accepting counts heavily in a sign installer's reliability score. If it happens anyway, you reopen the job. Signborn doesn't guarantee the work gets done: your agreement is with the fitter.

Do I work with Signborn or with the fitter?

With the fitter. For each job you make an agreement with a self-employed professional. Signborn acts as the intermediary, keeps the proof of handover and charges you, the client, a transparent Signborn fee.
