Hire a facade sign fitter for work at height

A facade sign fitter installs built-up and cut letters, facade signs, frames and projecting signs. A self-employed facade sign fitter usually charges €50 to €70 per hour. On Signborn you work with fitters who have the right certificates for work at height, each with their own rate.

Where facade signage goes wrong

  • Letters hanging crooked because nobody measured up the facade beforehand.
  • Anchors in the insulation layer instead of the load-bearing brickwork.
  • A cherry picker that won’t fit on the pavement on the day.
  • The end client calls about a loose sign, and nobody has photos of the installation.

Having facade signage installed: trade knowledge for agencies

  1. What a facade sign fitter installs

    • Built-up and cut letters, on stand-off fixings or on a rail.
    • Facade signs, panels and sign boards in composite or aluminium.
    • Projecting signs and light boxes. With electrics, that is work for an illuminated sign fitter.
    • Frames and banner systems for changing campaigns.
    • Removing old facade signage, including filling the drill holes.
  2. Measuring up and anchoring

Good facade signage starts with measuring up: the position relative to windows and joints, a level line and the substrate. Many facades have an insulation layer or a secondary facade behind them. Anchor into that without knowing and you get a sign that comes loose after a storm. The fitter chooses plugs and anchors that suit brickwork, concrete, timber or cladding, and the weight and wind load of what is being hung. For large or heavy elements the manufacturer often supplies fixing advice. Include it in your job.

  3. Working at height

Most facade signage hangs above ground-floor level. The fitter then works from a ladder, a mobile scaffold tower or a cherry picker. For a cherry picker, ask for a MEWP certificate, for example IPAF. On construction sites VCA is often mandatory. Self-employed fitters are usually asked for VCA-VOL. Agree in advance who hires the cherry picker and whether you need an exemption from the municipality for the pavement or road.

  4. Permit and building owner

Whether facade signage needs a permit is up to the municipality, which since the Environment and Planning Act (Omgevingswet, 2024) sets this in its environment plan. Listed buildings and protected townscapes often have extra rules. The end client or the agency arranges the permit and the building owner’s consent before installation. The fitter installs what has been approved.

  5. A good facade signage brief

    • Address, a photo of the facade and the desired position with measurements.
    • Material, dimensions and weight of each element.
    • The substrate, and whether there is insulation or a secondary facade behind it, if you know.
    • Working height and who arranges the cherry picker.
    • Whether electrics will be connected.
    • What needs to be removed and who takes it away.
    • Whether the permit is sorted.

Frequently asked questions about installing facade signage

Which certificates does a facade sign fitter need?

For work from a cherry picker they need a MEWP certificate. On construction sites VCA is often required, and from self-employed fitters usually VCA-VOL. Electrics involved? Then NEN 3140 is needed. Ask for the certificate in your job. Only fitters who hold it can then respond.

Does the fitter arrange the cherry picker?

You agree that per job. Some fitters have their own equipment, others hire it per job. Hire and transport usually come on top of the hourly rate.

Do I need a permit for facade signage?

That varies by municipality and is set out in the local environment plan (omgevingsplan). Arrange the permit and the building owner’s consent before installation. That is not the fitter’s job.

What does a facade sign fitter cost?

The fitter sets their own hourly rate. Work at height costs more than simple installation. See the rates page for guide prices. On top of that, as the client, you pay the Signborn fee: 8% for a match, minimum €15 and maximum €150 per sign installer per job.

Can the fitter also remove old facade signage?

Yes, removal is a separate skill. State in your job what needs to come down, whether drill holes need filling and who takes away the waste.

What if the sign comes loose later?

As a self-employed professional, the fitter is responsible for their own work and has their own public liability insurance. The photos with time and location and the end client’s signature show how the work was handed over.
