Where big vinyl jobs go wrong

  • A ten-metre Airtex wall and nobody to line up the panels seamlessly.
  • Frosted film with dust underneath, visible as soon as the light hits it.
  • Solar control film that doesn't suit the glass it's applied to.
  • Floor graphics without anti-slip in a spot where people walk.

A vinyl applicator through Signborn

  • A specialism for each type of vinylFull-colour, frosted, Clearview, solar control, Airtex and floor graphics are separate skills. You ask for what the project needs.

  • Paperwork checkedResponding is only possible with liability insurance that Signborn has checked. Installers list their KvK number and certificates themselves.
  • Proof at handoverPhotos with time and location and your end client's signature in one report.

Vinyl application: which work, which tradesperson

  1. Types of vinyl and what they need

    • Full-colour prints: printed, laminated vinyl for shop windows, walls and panels. Large formats need the panels lined up precisely.
    • Frosted film: matt, etched-glass-look film for privacy and decoration. Every speck of dust shows, so clean working is everything.
    • Clearview (one-way vision): perforated film you can see through from inside. Applied to the outside of the glass.
    • Solar control and heat-reflective window film: needs knowledge of glass types. With double glazing and some coatings there is a risk of thermal breakage, so choosing internal or external film is a technical decision.
    • Airtex and textiles: printed fabric or wall covering on large walls, in panels or on tension frames.
    • Floor graphics: printed floor vinyl with an anti-slip laminate for shops, trade fairs and wayfinding.
  2. Preparation decides the result

Glass is degreased and the edges are cleared of sealant and dirt. Walls must be dry, smooth and dust-free. Nothing sticks to fresh plaster or powdery paint. Floors must be clean and dry and suit the floor vinyl. A good vinyl applicator checks the surface first and flags it if it isn't suitable, rather than applying over it.

  3. Working at large format

Large areas are applied in panels, with an overlap or butt joint agreed in advance with whoever does the printing. With Airtex and wall coverings, it's about matching pattern and colour between panels. Whoever makes the design allows for bleed and seams. Whoever applies it measures up beforehand and reports any discrepancies before anything is cut.

  4. A good vinyl brief

    • Type of vinyl, brand, and whether it's already printed and laminated.
    • Dimensions of each area and the number of panels.
    • The surface, and whether it's indoors or outdoors.
    • For window film: the type of glass (single, double, HR++), if you know it.
    • Working height and whether a mobile scaffold tower is needed.
    • When the building is accessible, and whether work has to happen outside opening hours.
  5. Costs and planning

Vinyl applicators charge their own hourly rate or a price per square metre. A small shop window is often half a day. An Airtex wall or a window rollout across several shops takes days. Guide rates per specialism are on the rates page. As a client, you also pay the Signborn fee through Signborn: 8% for a match, minimum €15 and maximum €150 per sign installer per job. With your own network there is no fee.

Frequently asked questions about vinyl application

What does a vinyl applicator do?

They apply vinyl to glass, walls, floors, panels and vehicles: from full-colour prints and frosted film to Clearview, solar control film and Airtex. The work needs a clean surface, patience and experience with large formats.

Can solar control film go on double glazing?

Often, yes, but not every film on every type of glass. Some combinations carry a risk of thermal breakage. Have the vinyl applicator check the type of glass and follow the film supplier's advice.

What is Clearview?

Perforated film with a print on the outside. From outside you see the print, from inside you look straight through it. It's applied on the outside and suits shop windows and vehicle rear windows.

Does a vinyl applicator also apply floor graphics?

Yes, if it's floor vinyl with an anti-slip laminate. Ask for it as a skill in your job and include the surface and the walking route in your brief.

Does the vinyl applicator supply the material?

Usually the agency supplies the printed and laminated vinyl and the vinyl applicator applies it. Agree this in the job.

Can I hire vinyl applicators for a nationwide rollout?

Yes. With your own network you can plan in every region. Where matching is open, you post a job for each location and sign installers nearby respond. That way you spread a rollout across several self-employed installers.
